why fair trade

why fair trade

Fair trade is a positive and viable alternative trading model. Its primary goal is to build more equitable and sustainable relationships with small-scale co-operative producers in the South. It is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect that results in improved standards of living for producers and high-quality products for consumers.

Our Cocoa Camino products ensure a fair deal for producers by:

  • Guaranteeing fair prices to producers
  • Paying premiums to improve social conditions in producer communities
  • Paying producers in advance to assist in long-term planning and pre-harvest financing
  • Supporting democratic participation in farmer-owned co-operatives
  • Ensuring that there is no forced labour
  • Supporting sustainable farming practices

Through our support of producers over the years, the following projects have been financed through fair trade premiums:

  • Creation of a rural health clinic in Paraguay

  • Construction of water towers for village communities in the Dominican Republic

  • Construction of nurseries for cocoa plants and driers for harvested cocoa beans

  • Education subsidies and investment in educational materials and school renovation in the Dominican Republic

This allows you the consumer to know that all our claims are audited and verified by an independent third party certifier.

As 100% fair traders, we are members of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) , a global network of fair trade organizations whose mission is to improve the livelihoods and well being of disadvantaged producers by linking and promoting fair trade organizations, and speaking out for greater justice in world trade. Its members include producer co-operatives and associations, export marketing companies, importers, retailers, national and regional Fair Trade networks and financial institutions, dedicated to fair trade principles.
